Letter of Thanks to Captain Ash

With my best thanks to Captain Ash and the men of the SS “Lion” who last Spring gave out of their sealing voyage to the new Parsonage of Trinity East. I wish to acknowledge the sum of £9.1.6 received from them.

This together with the sum received from the SS “Bear” paid off the debt of 1877, and provided a few pounds more to go on with.

What the sealers did for the Parsonage last year was all the help I had.

My Parishioners are striving to enlarge and improve all the churches they have (3), besides building the new church at Salmon Cove – all of which is a hindrance to my Parsonage, which is again nearly Twenty Seven Pounds (£27.0.0) in debt.

However, not one of the churches is in debt.

Again I have to ask those of your sealers who belong to Trinity East Parish for help, as the Parsonage is still so unfinished and uncomfortable to live in, if the Captain will kindly allow me.

And I am sure my Parishioners on board will gladly respond as they may be able.

Cordially wishing you a prosperous voyage, I remain very truly yours.

Benjn. Smith, Minister of Trinity E.
5th March 1879

In total they collected ₤11.0.0 towards the expenses of repairs to the Parsonage on this voyage from the sealers.
